'Pianoforte-maker' ca. 1763-81
One of the «Twelve apostles»
He went to England in 1763, as 'Andrew BACKUS' and his first address was
Jermyn Straat. He became student of
Robert STODART and John BROADWOOD (see
below on this page), before he went to
Tschudi BURKHARDT.
"The Grand Pianoforte may be said to have been born in England; for although
its inventor, Americus Backers, was a Dutchman, it was in Jermyn-street,
about the year 1767, that the instrument was originally planned. Backers was
a manufacturer of harpsichords. Instead of clothing the strings (when first
"applying hammers"), he merely caused them to be struck by soft wood or
cork, with a view to obtain the harpsichord tone so much admired at that
period. Subsequently, however, he adopted a thin covering of leather. His
mechanism, which possessed the double merit of effectiveness and simplicity,
competed successfully with that of the most noted and ingenious of his
contemporaries, and was gradually adopted by the principal makers, not only
in this country, but on the continent, where it was specially recognized as
the "Mecanique Anglaise," or "Die Englische Mecanik." Upon his decease
(somewhere near 1781), Backers, proud of his discovery, confided it to the
future keeping of his friend, John Broadwood, who, while in the employ of
Burkhard Shudi, used to go every evening, accompanied by his own apprentice,
Robert Stodart, to assist in bringing it to perfection."

"BEARE & SON,
IMPORTERS AND MANUFACTURERS OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS,
34, RATHBONE PLACE, W. -
THIS eminent and well-known house was founded upwards of a quarter of a
century ago by the present proprietor, Mr. John Beare (with whom was
originally associated his father, Mr. William Beare, who is well known and
highly respected by the trade, with which he has been connected for nearly
half a century, but who has now practically retired from the active part of
the business), and has attained a high position in the trade. The warehouse
in Rathbone Place is a lofty four-storey structure, and has been admirably
arranged for the accommodation of a remarkably large and varied stock of
musical instruments. In one part of the premises one finds a room full of
concertinas and accordeons; elsewhere there is a wonderful array of brass
instruments. One room is devoted to violoncelli and contrabassi; another to
drums and fifes. The large and interesting family of the “wood wind” is well
represented, numerous styles of flutes, piccolos, oboes, and clarionets
being displayed; and the firm are specialising flutes and piccolos made in
accordance with the excellent system patented in 1867. For fifteen guineas
they can offer a magnificent flute, with the highest improvements in
mechanism and a guaranteed purity and richness of tone combined with perfect
intonation. Flutes and piccolos on the Boehm system are also among the
specialities of this house, and for these Messrs. Beare & Son have a large
demand. It is for violins, however, that this firm are particularly famous,
and they claim to hold the largest and best selected stock of old and new
violins in London. Certainly the collection in this department is a
magnificent one, and includes many grand instruments, of superb tone and
exquisite workmanship. There are rare old violins, at prices ranging from £3
to £600, old violas from £3 to £50, old ’cellos from £5 to £50, and old
double basses from £15 to £70. Special attention is due to the firm’s
celebrated Barzoni violins, violoncellos, and double basses; and there are
in this department some splendid instruments by Joseph Hel, and a choice
selection of beautifully varnished violins, made expressly for the firm on
models of the old masters. In short, Messrs. Beare & Son have undoubtedly
one of the most comprehensive and interesting stocks of stringed instruments
played with a bow to be met with anywhere, and their prices are as moderate
as their goods are reliable.

(continuation)
Messrs. Beare & Son also keep in stock
guitars, banjos, mandolines, zithers, and many other instruments of
modern use, together with all manner of musical accessories, from
tuning-forks and pipes to resin and music stools. A glance at the firm’s
beautifully printed and illustrated catalogue (one of the handsomest
publications in the trade) will show how exhaustive is the stock held at
this notable warehouse. Even the “Jew’s harp,” or “Jaws harp,” as it
probably ought to be written, is represented and, of course, the
universally popular pianoforte is not neglected, Messrs. Beare & Son’s
saloon pianofortes having an excellent reputation. The firm also publish
vocal and instrumental music, holding several valuable copyrights in
this connection; and they issue an excellent tutor for the violin, by
Thomas Haines. Altogether this is a fine and well-developed business,
standing well to the front among its contemporaries, and enjoying the
support and confidence of a widespread home, foreign, and Colonial
connection. The affairs of the house are personally directed with
conspicuous ability and judgment by the principal, Mr. John Beare, than
whom there are few men possessing a more exhaustive practical knowledge
of the musical instrument trade in all its branches."

1911 - "The Bell Piano & Organ Co.
(Lim.) report brisk business in all departments, the demand for two manual
organs (including their new "Student's Model") being especially marked. By
the way, we noticed on the latter instrument - one of which is on show at
the company's London depot, 49, Holborn Viaduct, E.C. - that double pedals
are now fitted in place of the single foot blower as formerly. Many consider
this a great advantage. The manager informed us that the only trouble is to
get these organs from the Canadian factory in sufficient quantities. The
company's London piano factory is runniig at full swing, and the output is
booked up well ahead both for the home trade and for export specialties.
Their new Medieval overstrung is an attractive instrument which appeals to
the growing class who prefer a small sized pianoforte."

BEMETZRIEDER Antonius |
Patent of 1801 : "MR. A.
Bemetzrieder's (Chelsea) for making Piano-fortes. - After a full description
of the various pans of the invention for which this patent has been taken,
it is observed in the specification, that the differences from the old
construction are not merely works of chance ; they are grounded on
principles either hitherto unknown or neglected.
1.
Besides the known proportions, there is a maximum, that is, a more
advantageous point where the hammer ought to strike the string. This
maximum requires the action in the middle of the instrument.
2. Strings riding
upon a sonorous plank, can give but a thin and stiff tone; but strings
riding upon a sonorous body must give a finer, full, and singing tone,
which is the reason that the new string-frame has all the solidity
wanted to resist fully, and by itself, all the drawing forces, in order
that a light and sounding-back may form a sonorous body with a
bridge-belly.
3.
The piano-forte music is harmony ; and harmony proceeds in its
propagation from the treble to the bass, and ought to go directly, and
without reflexion, from the action of the player to the cars of the
auditors. This is the reason why these instruments have the bals and
swelling at their back.
4.
The piano-forte takes its name from its particular movement, which must
be simple, free, and elastic, in order that the performer may have under
his fingers the pianos, fortes, more pianos, more fortes, pianissimos &
fortistimos. This is the reason that all the parts of the instrument are
independent one of another; and the whole so constructed as to obey the
player who has taste and swelling at the end of his fingers."

BENSTED Thomas
| BENSTEAD
(ca. 1826 - 1910) |
1910 - "ANOTHER
royal borough-Richmond, to wit - is poorer by the death in his
seventy-fourth year of Mr. Thomas Bensted. It is true that the business that
he established at 32, Hill Street in 1869 had passed into other hands and he
himself had lately been living in retirement at Hove, but for the greater
part of his life Mr. Bedsted was associated with Richmond, Surrey. I say
that the place is poorer by his death not becausz of any great honour to
which he attained or of any great work which he accomplished, but because of
one single incident in his career with which I am personally acquainted.
This related simply to his kindly, tolerant and generous treatment of an
employee under very sad and trying circumstances. Mr. Bensted put himself to
great personal inconvenience to help a poor fellow in misfortune. Doubtless
it was not his only essay in self denial; hence I say that any place in
which such a man lived is the poorer by his death. By the way, it is curious
how many good people connected with the music trade find rest in Brighton
and Hove. Mr. Matthews (Howard & Co.) lived there for some years; Mr. Paish
(ex Torquay) still flourishes in retirement; so, I trust, does Mr. Peter
Bridger, late of Leeds. And there are others whose names at the moment I
cannot recall."

ISON'S Trade Chat on OVERSTRUNG PIANOS. - The New Season is now starting and
the up-to-date Dealer is naturally wondering what is going to be the Seller.
It is well known that the English manufacturers are far above what they were
in the manufacture of Overstrung Pianos and the tendency of the general
public is more and more for English Pianos made by Englishmen for
Englishmen.
Bertram Ison & Co. have anticipated this demand and are producing a high
class English Overstrung Piano at a Moderate Price. The tone and touch are
perfect; case work, polish and general finish equal to the best foreign
instrument; and the success has been instantaneous. At the request of a number of our customers who are anxious
to see them and to try the tone before buying, we are having SMALL EXHIBITS
of Pianos for the TRADE ONLY at the following towns during the month of
September; and we only ask our customers to WAIT AND SEE these Pianos before
buying elsewhere.

1910 - "MR.
BERTRAM Ison had a show of pianos at the Tudor Hotel, Oxford Street,
from November 15th to the 19th. Nearly all the big London dealers
favoured him with a visit, as did also a few provincial gentleman who
happened to be in town for the motor show at Olympia. There was «on
demonstration» the Tel-Electric player attached to a Kessel's upright.
The box in which the little perforated brass roll is located was a dozen
feet away from the instrument (it could be used in the next room, if
desired); and the magnets by which the current operates the keys are
underneath the keyboard. It is a wonderful invention. The player on view
was not driven by an electric current from the hotel, but simply by
means of a five-cell accumulator. Winkelmann pianos (including a grand,
the compass of which is up to C), made by Messrs. Zeitter and
Winkelmann, merited attention; and the new and cheaper Knauss (Coblenz)
instruments, to sell at forty pounds, were nearly all the time being
tried and admired. It has been rumoured, we hear, that this new piano is
not made by Messrs. Knauss in the Coblenz factory. Mr. Ison asks us to
contradict the statement; for all models are made in the Coblenz factory
only. We dare say that there were two score pianos on exhibition, not
the least of them being those by Max Kleng of Dresden. Great attention
was directed to three new overstrungs labelled Bertram Ison & Co. The
instruments are British built, the action being an expensive continental
one; and the polish was so excellent that the critical stated that they
looked like and were as good as German models, but there is the
advantage of them being cheaper. A couple of these designs were of the
Adams and the Sheraton styles. Mr. Ison is pleased with the results up
to now; and if only orders in the future get to hand as promised, -well,
he will be busy. In any case a warehouse for stock will, we hear, be
opened in due course in London."

"BINCKES v. PASH. Nov. 16. - Where the owner of the dominant tenement has
exceeded the limits of the right which he has acquired to the access of
light and air, by opening an additional window, leaving his ancient windows
unaltered, he has not necessarily lost or suspended his admitted right: but
the opening of the additional window justifies the owner of the servient
tenement in obstructing the ancient windows if the doing so is unavoidable
in the exercise of his right to obstruct the new window.
The plaintiff was a pianoforte maker carrying on business in Cornbury Place,
Old Kent Road; his premises consisting of a building containing two floors,
the lower having five windows, and being used as a workshop, -the upper floor
having four windows and a door, and being used as a warehouse or showroom.
The defendant was a boot and shoe manufacturer carrying on business on
premises adjoining those of the plaintiff. In or about the month of August,
1860, the defendant commenced building a workshop on a spot at the rear of
his own premises and abutting on the plaintiff's premises, at the distance
of about ten feet from the plaintiff's workshop and showroom. The plaintiff,
conceiving that the defendant's building would darken his windows, took
proceedings in Chancery for the purpose of enjoining him from proceeding
therewith so as to obstruct his (the plaintiff's) lights. Pursuant to an
order of Kindersley, V. C., the present action was brought to try the right
at law, the proceedings in equity being in the mean time suspended.

OBITUARY
1910 - "Death of Mr. Litchfield Binckes. - An old South London pianoforte maker and dealer has passed away to his rest. Mr. Binckes of Walworth Road died last month after only a couple of days' illness at the good old age of seventy-nine. The deceased gentleman had kept to his work until a year or so ago: he was much respected by his neighbours and by all who knew him and who came in contact with him, either in business matters or otherwise. He was the second Litchfield Binckes, the business having been established in the year 1826 by his father.
The establishment is now being carried on by Mr. Litchfield M. Binckes, the deceased gentleman's son. It might be mentionned in conclusion that Mr. Binckes was one of the pioneers of the hire purchase system, was staunch conservative and tariff reformer and took an active interest in the last election.."

BLANKENSTEIN L. & Co |
LONDON -
"Blankenstein & Co., who handle the Miller organs in England, make
a prominent display of these. instruments, which on account of their
solidity of construction, rich combinations, and sweet tone, have achieved
no little popularity in this market. A special cheap style has just been
introduced to supply a want for an organ containing one or two rows of
reeds. Blankenstein & Co. also exhibit Carl Mand's grand pianos, and some
upright instruments of their own manufacture. Mention should be made of a
valuable invention of Carl Mand's: it is a system of T ribs for sounding
boards. The inventor gives to the ribs the shape of a capital T instead of
the rectangular shape hitherto in use, on the ground that this plan gives
far greater supporting strength than massive rectangular iron even of much
larger size and weight. He says, "an exact calculation has revealed the
surprising fact that a T rib of the same volume of wood as a rectangular
rib, say for instance, I in. wide, and 2 in. high, resists in comparison
just 4.99 times the pressure, in a word, just 5 times the resistance to the
pressure of the strings thus-a T shaped rib of half this volume of wood
resists just as much as a square rib of double the size. The practical
trials of my invention have proved without doubt the correctness of my
theory - that the sounding board of pianos provided with T ribs of only one
half the ordinary size retain permanently their convexity or roundness of
construction (which in the centre of the sound board amounts to a trifle
over 1/4 of an inch) whereas rectangular ribs of double the size cannot
prevent the sounding-board from going concave or hollow, and with it all the
brilliancy of tone. With my T ribs there is, as a matter of fact, and
increase of both strength and beauty of sound wave in the instrument,
obtained through the reduction in wood volume of the ribs. This is
particularly noticeable in the middle and bass of the piano, nor has this
improvement been obtained in any other instrument of the same kind."
