1892 - "In Northampton
Street Messrs. Barnett Samuel & Sons' organ factory likewise is in full
swing. Independently of their well-known old styles, they are producing now
a one-row organ with divided octave coupler, in a carved solid walnut case;
also a one-and-a-halfrow organ with double couplers, in handsomely designed
walnut case. Both instruments are at a moderate price. At Worship Street the
sale of the Chicago Cottage Organ is rapidly extending. The demand increased
so suddenly during last month that their stock was temporarily quite
denuded, and they had to cable for fresh supplies. Style 55, of which
Messrs. Barnett Samuel & Sons sold over five hundred in Great Britain, is
still a favourite, but is likely to be run hard by the new Style 905. "

Man hatte nämlich vorhin in
Pianofortes in London verfertigte.
Okt. 75 Guin.
kleine (Small Pianofortes) mit zirkelrunden Enden, 6 Okt. 3 Pedale, 60
Guineas; Do. 54 Okt. 54. Guineas; Do. viereckig, 6 Okt. 46 G.; Do. do. 5.

Zusatz-Tasten (Additiona Keys): viereckige, 6 Fuß lang, 36 G.; Do. 54 Fuß,
Weltgegenden."

"MESSRS. SCHOTT &
CO., MUSIC SELLERS TO THE QUEEN, MUSIC PUBLISHERS AND IMPORTERS,
157 AND 159, REGENT STREET, W. -
ORGANISED at St. James’s Street in the year 1835 as a branch establishment
of the famous German publishing house of the same name, which had flourished
and is still in high activity since the year 1768, the commercial prosperity
of the concern in London has been both rapid and continuous. In 1850 a
transference was effected to the present eligible premises, which are in
every point of character and situation precisely adapted to the requirements
of a very select high-class business of the kind. They consist of a neat,
elegantly appointed salon, with the remainder of the two three-storied
houses for warehouse purposes, in which an exhaustive stock of sheet and
book music for all instruments and voices is held, carefully classified,
comprising standard works, such as Wagner’s Operas, which are the copyright
of the firm, and music fully up to the hour of publication, and especially
music from the leading Continental publishers of the day. The extent of
their publications, especially of pianoforte and string music, is enormous;
and the trade controlled is one of considerable volume, and, as already
noted, the patronage is a very select one, including Her Majesty the Queen
and members of the Royal Family, and many other distinguished personages
drawn from the elite of the English and foreign aristocracy and lovers of
music in every quarter of the kingdom."

SCHUPPISSER Henry
(? - 1890) |
1890 - "We regret to announce
the death of Mr. Henry Schuppisser, head of the firm of Schuppisser & Sons,
pianoforte makers, of Buck Street, Camden Town, which event took place on
March 24th last. The deceased gentleman who was brought up as a cabinet
maker-sprang from a German-Swiss family at Zurich, although he lived most of
his youth in the more French portion of Switzerland, at Geneva. Leaving that
town about 1840, he spent several years in travel, visiting Russia (where he
held an appointment for some time), Egypt, the Holy Land, &c., in company
with a fellow traveller, with whom he retained lifelong friendship. His
journeys brought him to London, where he obtained work at Erard's. At that
establishment he became acquainted with a couple of journeymen named Knoll
and Ecuyer, and after a while they linked their fortunes in business under
the style of "Knoll, Ecuyer & Schuppisser." That partnership, however, was
dissolved, and the deceased started by himself, about the year of the great
exhibition, first over Foulden's fret cutting factory in the Euston Road,
then at Titchfield Street, then at High Street (N.W.), and ultimately at
Buck Street, where the firm now have their factory. We understand that the
business will still continue, under the charge of two sons, Charles Erard
and Francis Louis, who were associated with him in business. The deceased
gentleman was within a year of the allotted three score and ten."

1867, 18th March. N° 778. Simms' Improved Pianoforte Insulator.
LETTERS PATENT to Henry Simms, of Gay Street, Bath, in the County of
Somerset, Music Seller, for the Invention of "IMPROVED APPARATUS TO BE
USED IN CONNECTION WITH PIANOFORTES." - Sealed the 10th September 1867,
and dated the 18th March 1867. - PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by the
said Henry Simms at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his
Petition, on the 18th March 1867.
I, HENRY SIMMS, of Gay Street, Bath, in the County of Somerset, Music
Seller, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for "IMPROVED
APPARATUS TO BE USED IN CONNECTION WITH PIANOFORTES," to be as follows:
, This Invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain
apparatus by the use of which (in conjunction with the ordinary glass
insulators on which the feet of pianofortes are placed) the instrument
to 10 which it is applied is perfectly insulated, and the tone reflected
or carried into the apartment in accordance with the laws of acoustics,
thus obviating an objection which frequently applies to upright
pianofortes. [...][...]"

BIO
"Smart, Sir George-Thomas, chef

OBITUARY
"Mr. Henry Smart. Nov. 27. Of a typhus
fever at Dublin (whither be had gone to superintend the debut of his pupil,
Miss Coward,) Mr. Henry Smart. Mr. Smart began his musical education under
Mr. Cramer, and played in the early part of his life in the Orchestras of
the Opera, Haymarket Theatre, and at the Ancient Concert. At the opening of
the English Opera House, he was engaged as leader, and continued in that
capacity for several years. When the present Drurylane Theatre opened, Mr.
Smart was also retained as its leader; and, we believe, it was his peculiar
pride to have formed that orchestra entirely of English artists; and in such
estimation did they hold his character, that on his retirement from the
Theatre in 1821, the Orchestra presented him with a silver cup, as a mark of
their gratitude and his merits. Mr. Smart was leader at the Oratorios, at
which he had assisted since they were under the conduct uf bis brother, Sir
George Smart, which began in 1813. In 1820 Mr. Smart entered into a
manufactory for piano-fortes, and, but a very short period since, had
obtained a patent for an Important improvement in the touch of these
instruments. He was distinguished by great urbanity of manners. In his
nature he was kind, generous, and humane. He always evinced an ardent love
of his art, and, on all occasions, private reeling gave way to public
interests in its exercise."

"Edwin Smith, of Blackburn, was to exhibit six styles of the Weaner
organs, shipped from York, Pa., especially for the purpose. But on Wednesday
last he received a cablegram as follows:-"Organs miscarried, ship from
regular stock." He is, therefore, unable to show some new styles which he
hoped would captivate the dealers. He, however, makes a fair display, and in
addition to the Weaner goods, shows two styles of cheaper Englishmade organs
and samples of Carl Mand's (Coblenz), Bachmann's and Consohn, Bru & Co.'s
pianos. The last named instruments are well finished, have metal standards
and brass hammer rails, and sell from 35 to 40 guineas."
