Er erlernte hier die Tischlerei, widmete sich aber später in Prag bei Weiß ausschließlich dem Instrumentenbau, bereiste die Städte Wien, Negensburg, Dresden und Berlin, arbeitete bei den berühmtesten Meistern, und befindet sich seit 1815 in Breslau. Die Vorzüge seiner Flügel, die in einem hellen Glockentone und einem- ganz besonders leichten An« schlage bestehen, haben ihm einen ausgebreiteten Ruf verschafft." "Lentz, Heinrich Gerhard, gediegener deutscher Claviervirtuose und Componist, geboren 1764 zu Köln, erhielt von seinem Vater, einem dortigen vorzüglichen Organisten, Unterricht im Clavier- und Orgelspiel. Von seinen! Landsleuten wegen seiner musikalischen Tüchtigkeit bewundert, ging er 1784 nach Paris, wo mitgebrachte Empfehlungen ihm u. A. auch das Ooncert spirituel eröffneten. Dort spielte er unter grossem Beifall sein erstes Ciavierconcert mit ] Orchester, welches er alsbald nebst anderen Compositionen in den Druck geben: musste. Die Basis seiner Existenz aber bildete der gute Musikunterricht, den er in einigen hochadlichen Häusern zu ertheilen hatte. Im J. 1791 ging er nach London, wo er sich als schaffender und ausübender Künstler schnell einen vorzüglichen Ruf verschaffte, so dass Ciementi gern mit ihm verkehrte, der Concertmeister Salomon einige seiner Sinfonien und Ciavierconcerte aufführen liess und selbst sein grosses compositorisches Vorbild, Joseph Haydn, ihm, in England anwesend, oft Zeichen seiner Hochachtung kundgab. Im J. 1795 kehrte L. nach Deutschland zurück und verweilte zunächst in Hamburg, bis ihn der musikübende Prinz Louis Ferdinand von Preussen im folgenden Jahre nach Berlin zog und ihm glückliche Tage bereitete. Das vertraute Verhältniss mit diesem Fürsten löste sich, als Dussek 1802 an den Hof kam und einen unumschränkten Einfiuss auszuüben begann. L. ging zunächst nach Halle und hierauf, da er keine seinen Talenten entsprechende Stellung fand, nach Lemberg, von dort endlich nach Warschau.

Hier gründete er eine Pianofortefabrik und verheirathete sich mit einer tüchtigen jungen Musiklehrerin, aus deren Feder einige Talent bezeugende Compositionen für Clavier und für Gesang gedruckt existiren. Nur zu bald starb aber die junge Frau an einer Brustkrankheit, und L. verheirathete sich zum zweiten Male; beide Ehen sind jedoch kinderlos geblieben. Von 1826 bis 1831 war L. Professor am Warschauer Conservatorium, besonders im Orgelspiel, und bis zu seinem Tode blieb er ein gesuchter und hochgeschätzter Musiklehrer. Er starb am 21. Aug. 1839 zu Warschau in Folge eines Schlaganfalls. Seine ungemein beliebt gewesenen, im Haydn'schen Style componirten gedruckten Compositionen bestehen aus drei Sinfonien, drei Concerten, Präludien und vielen Variationen für Clavier, zwölf Sonaten mit Violine oder Flöte, neun Clavier-Trios und sechs deutschen Gesängen mit Clavierbegleitung."
